Wall, island, under-cabinet, and insert range hoods all share the same basic components: a motor, fan blade, light source, and a damper. Most failures are mechanical — a seized motor, a broken damper, a failed LED panel — and most are same-visit fixes. Ducted hoods sometimes need a check on the duct run if airflow has weakened gradually.
How a range hood works
A range hood pulls air from above the stovetop, filters out grease through removable filters, and either vents the air outside (ducted) or recirculates it back into the kitchen via charcoal filters (ductless). A motorized damper closes when the hood is off to prevent backflow.
What we typically fix
- 01
Fan won't turn on
Could be a failed motor (most common in older hoods), a failed switch or control board, or a tripped breaker. We test each in sequence. Switch failures are the cheapest fix; motor replacements are routine but more involved.
- 02
Lights out
Range hood lights vary by model — incandescent, halogen, or LED. LEDs are integrated into the unit and don't replace as a bulb; the whole LED panel needs swapping. Halogen and incandescent bulbs are user-replaceable but the bulb often isn't the failure — it's the wiring connector or switch.
- 03
Loud rattling
Usually the fan blade has come loose on its shaft, the damper is flapping, or there's debris caught in the blower. Less commonly the motor bearings are wearing out. Diagnosis: turn off, look in with a flashlight, check what moves freely.
- 04
Weak airflow
Three common causes: grease-clogged filters (cleaning often fixes), a partially failed motor (running slower), or a duct restriction somewhere in the run. Cleaning filters first; if no change, motor or duct issue.
- 05
Touch controls unresponsive
Modern hoods use touch panels that can fail from steam exposure or wear. Sometimes a clean fixes it; sometimes the panel itself needs replacing.
- 06
Damper or duct issues
The damper is the flap that opens when the fan runs and closes when off. When it sticks closed, airflow drops dramatically. When it sticks open, you get drafts from outside when the hood is off. Both are routine fixes.
Types of range hoods we service
Different builds fail in different ways. Here's what we see most often across each type.
Under-cabinet
Mounted under an upper cabinet, above the stovetop. The most common configuration. Easiest to service since the hood is already mounted within reach.
Wall-mount (chimney)
Mounted directly to a wall above the stovetop with a visible chimney extending up to the ceiling. Looks more dramatic; common in modern kitchens. Service involves working at height.
Island
Mounted from the ceiling over an island stovetop. The duct runs up through the ceiling. Hardest to service — usually requires ladders and sometimes pulling the hood down for major work.
Insert / liner
The mechanical part of a hood installed inside a decorative custom hood enclosure (the wood or metal cabinet you see). Common in custom kitchens. Service requires removing the inner liner from the enclosure carefully.
Downdraft
Pop-up hood that rises from behind or beside the stovetop. Less common, more complex mechanism. Service involves both the airflow components and the lift mechanism.
Signs your range hood needs repair
- Smoke not clearing as fast as it used to
- Burning smell from the motor
- Fan speed not changing when you change the setting
- Lights flickering or one element out
- Cold air blowing in when the fan is off
Try these before booking
Quick checks that resolve a meaningful share of range hood calls without a tech visit.
- 01
Clean the grease filters
Most filters are aluminium mesh and dishwasher-safe — pull them out, run a dishwasher cycle on hot. For heavily-clogged filters, soak in hot water with degreaser. Clean filters do more for airflow than any service we can perform.
- 02
Check the charcoal filter (ductless only)
If your hood is ductless, it has a charcoal filter that needs replacement every 6–12 months depending on use. They don't clean — they get replaced.
- 03
Inspect the damper (where accessible)
If you can see the damper from outside (some installations have it visible behind a louvered grille), check that it opens when the fan runs and closes when off.
- 04
Check the breaker
If everything's out (fan, lights), it's likely a tripped breaker. Range hoods are usually on a kitchen circuit that also runs other appliances.
Parts we can replace
Parts we commonly replace during a range hood repair.
- Blower motor
- Fan blade/wheel
- LED light panel
- Switches
- Damper assembly
- Charcoal filter (ductless)
- Grease filter
- Control board
- Wiring harness
- Mount brackets
Before our visit
What to do
- Clean grease filters before our visit
- Note whether the hood is ducted (vents outside) or ductless (recirculating)
- Take a photo of any error code or behaviour the hood is showing
- Have the model number ready (inside the hood near the filters)
Finding the model number
Model number is typically inside the hood — remove the grease filters and look at the back wall or the underside. A photo works.
